Atlas Peak AVA
Designated an AVA on 21 January, 1992. The Atlas Peak AVA is located within Napa Valley AVA just northeast of the City of Napa. The appellation sits on a higher elevation than most of Napa's wine region which limits the effects of the cool fog coming in from Pacific Ocean.
The westward orientation of most vineyards on the Vaca Mountains also extends the amount of direct sunlight on the grapes. The soil of this AVA is volcanic and very porous which allows it to cool down quickly despite the increased sunlight.
The area has a fairly significant diurnal temperature variation upwards of 30 °F between daytime and night. This contributes to the balance of acidity that grapes from Atlas Peak vineyards are known to have.

The Antinori Napa Valley estate was born from the dream of Marchese Piero Antinori to create a sublime expression of Napa Valley mountain winemaking after his first visit to the region in the 1960s. After many years, his dream began to take shape with the acquisition of a 1,200-acre property composed of rugged, high-elevation terrain, with rocky soil in a remote corner of the Vaca Mountain range, the finest parcels of which he transformed into immaculate vineyards over the following years.
The winery produces three wines (Proficio, Townsend, and A26) available in select markets across the US and abroad, and a number of limited-production wines available only at the winery. All wines are estate-grown and produced, and while they reflect the Antinori’s tradition and culture, each is indelibly imprinted with the terroir of Napa Valley.
The family views its role as that of steward to this esteemed site, drawing upon centuries of winemaking experience in Italy to cultivate the essence of an iconic Napa Valley estate to its highest potential. Even with this deep knowledge, this unique mountain landscape has required years of study and oenological research, and still represents an on-going pursuit to craft the best expression of these wines.
The Antinori philosophy is exemplified by the iconic Latin phrase found on its historic family crest: “Te Duce Proficio,” which translates to “Following your guide, I flourish.” These three words honor the legacy and deep tradition of the family, while serving as the driving force behind the family’s quest for excellence for generations to come.
The Estate offers private seated tastings by reservation only, Monday through Friday. To request an appointment, contact the Estate at info@antinorinapavalley.com. Each tasting experience can be reserved for one party of up to six guests. Priority is given to active membership.
